What To Wear In Norway

September 23rd, 2007 · 8 Comments

fall-pic-for-posts.jpgWhile I was preparing to move to Norway, I know as an American moving to Norway (and more specifically a ‘Southern Californian’ moving to Norway) I was searching the internet day and night for what to wear. I was wondering what to wear in right now, and what to wear in the winter. I have never lived where it snows and the only time I ever see snow is going on vacation to the mountains. So things like warm winter wear is a very foreign idea to me (almost as foreign as living in Oslo).

Since I have started this blog I have noticed that many of the people visiting my site are looking for what to wear in Norway right now and what to wear during the winter. Most of you searching for this information are like me, Americans moving to Norway. And so I wanted to give my advice of what to wear in Norway right now. As for what to wear during the winter, you will just have to wait till I figure it out.

Right now the weather is beautiful. Its cool fall weather with some cold wind and it rains every few days. I love it and its gorgeous. But it is a little cool, so I wear pants, long sleeves and sweatshirts everyday. I tend to be warm enough though, but it seems that most people here are dressing a little warmer than I am. Most of the people I see out in the street are wearing something similar to me but also with a bigger jacket over or/and scarves. I see lots and lots of scarves. I personally think I can wait before I need an extra jacket on top, or a scarf but I would suggest it considering I seem to be in a few less layers than everyone else.

If your going out in Oslo these days, don’t forget your umbrellas. It always looks like its about to rain, so you never know.

I have to add one funny point though about how everyone is dressing warmer than I am right now. Because today I was walking with my friend, and I saw a guy who had full winter/snow wear on just to go get a cup of coffee. The hat, scarf, gloves, big puffy jacket and completely wrapped up in everything from head to toe – you would think was zero degrees outside. I laughed and commented to my friend that it was a little dramatic for the sixty degree weather we were having. He said that thats what happens in Oslo when the weather changes. If it gets a little colder, people act like there is a snow storm. He said that during the winter and cold months, that if the sun comes out for even just a second that people go running outside with shorts on (no matter how cold it actually is).

So the moral of the fashion story is: That I am perfectly fine with a sweatshirt, long sleeves and pants on. But the rest of the people here seem to need a few more layers to keep warm. If you tend to be chilly, wrap up a little more with a scarf or a warmer jacket. But either way, enjoy the perfect fall weather!

Thanks, I will be going to Norway in July, and July is more warmer than September, so I’ll attempt to wear T’s =)

You may never know a blog entry you wrote 3 years ago could be beneficial, so don’t ever go like “Oh, I don’t think I need to blog about this” ;)

    Peaceout.

you need to wear layers, woollen preferably!
have a woollen undershirt, and woollen long johns, wool socks and a wool jumper, with a beanie, and jacket, also a scarf might be helpful too!
