This is an outrage!

I had this experience first in Norway while eating out at a restaurant and now in Lithuania as well. I ordered food that came with french fries. Well I normally like dressing (ranch) for my fries but they don’t have “real” ranch dressing over here in my opinion. So when I was at the restaurant in Norway I asked for 1000 island dressing on the side instead. Fine, they brought it and everything was ok. Till we got the bill. They charged 35kr- for the side of dressing! That is so crazy.

So my friend and I discussed this outrage and figured it was just Norway. Well, I’m on vacation in Lithuania right now and I had the same thing happen but just asked for ketchup for my fries. It came in a nice little bowl on a little plate with a spoon. I thought it was sweet serving ketchup in such a fancy way! Well, I realized why when we got the bill. Of course, we had to pay for it. It is an outrage!

Ouch, sorry to hear you’ve been charge a lot for that dressing! Aren’t they supposed to be FREE?! :(

Gosh! They really charge you for every little thing, huh? My friend told me they don’t even serve ice in London. Can you believe that?!

Hi Kristie,
yeah that’s pretty much true throughout Europe (EU, €-Zone & Schnegen :-)).

It even gets worse: most grocery stores in Germany make you deposit 1-2 € to use a shopping cart and make you pay for the grocery bags. And to add insult to injury, they make you bag the groceries yourself.

At least it’s not as bad as in Rome where I’Ve actually had to pay for using silverware at a restaurant!

These are some of the niggling, annoying things which tend to get under an ex-pat’s skin and make them that much more homesick.

I won’t laugh. I’ve been in the same siuation. Although I must say that you could do a lot worse than 1000 island dressing for your fries… maybe! ~Jerry

This sounds crazy. I’ve never been charged extra for having dressing on a salad or on fries.
