Norway As It Should Be (Check out the pictures below)

October 30th, 2008 · 30 Comments

If you have been reading my blog since I have moved to Oslo, Norway you will probably remember that I was very disappointed with the weather last winter. It seemed to take forever for it to finally snow and when it did it did not last long. One thing that this California girl was really looking forward to when I moved to Norway was the snow and the winter weather.

Well this morning I woke up to a very nice surprise! Real original Norwegian snow :) It was so white and beautiful! I took some pictures to show you because it was so amazing. When you walked in it it is so white and fluffy. The perfect powdery snow.

I don’t know why the snow makes me so happy…but it does. I guess I am in the right country then (at least this year).

Check out the pictures I took yesterday and today. The world can look entirely different in one night!

Pictures that I took yesterday on a beautiful fall day in Oslo

Yesterday before the snow!

Oslo before the snow!

Oslo before the snow!

Pictures that I took this morning when fall in Norway turned magically into winter!

A picture of the beautiful scene I saw from my balcony this morning.

The first snow in Oslo in 2008

Winter in Oslo.

I know that my obsession with the weather here might seem silly to a lot of people. But I think it is so exciting. If you would have seen me today…I was smiling the whole day just because of the snow! :)

Are you an expat living in a new country? Do you experience drastic weather differences in your new home? Please leave a comment so I can hear about your experiences too!

Growing in California as well, snow was always fun for me too! Even after moving to an area that snowed, it was still fun after a few winters. On top of the beautiful winterscapes, it’s makes summer that much more fun to look forward too.

I grew up in San Diego. We had two seasons. Fall and Summer. Boring.

    Hello,
I tried to contact you by e-mail but the form wouldn’t let me fill out any of my information. Anyway, I would be very appreciative if I could ask you a few questions via e-mail about working as an expatriate in Norway. I am an international business student in the U.S. and I’m doing a presentation on business culture in Norway. Please let me know if you can help at all or know someone who can. I promise I won’t take much of your time. Great pictures by the way!

Hei! Wow beautiful pictures of Oslo. I’m bummed that I missed out on Fall in Norway but I guess I’ll be in for some winter fun. I’m from Ohio so I’m used to snow and cold but its unpredicable in Ohio not cold all the time as I’m sure I might run into in Norway. I leave for Norway Dec. 20th and I’m spending 2 weeks there. I enjoyed my 3 month stay this summer and can’t wait to go back. Though I’m not looking forward to the cold, snow is always pretty no matter where you are. I didn’t forget about your email Kristie just been busy with finishing my Masters Degree and now I have more time to figure out my future move to Norway.

I just saw that you posted a comment on my site. It may have been about a year ago or so. I haven’t been there much lately, but maybe I’ll be coming back to it. I’ll explain on there why I have been so busy.
But I will come by here more often too. Looks like a great site you got here!

I just stumbled across your website while looking for resources (and I could not get the contact page to work), and wanted to tell you how helpful and entertaining your blog is!
I’m engaged to a wonderful Norwegian man, we will marry in 2009 (here in WA state), and most likely move to Norway within the first year of being married…I spent my whole summer there, so am familiar with the culture, and the locations, my Norwegian is pretty good also…but I cannot help being super nervous about totally uprooting myself from my home-country to become a proper Norwegian wife!
I’ll continue to read and stay in touch, thanks so much for sharing your life and precious info about being an expat in Norway!

  • 12 Kristie // Nov 24, 2008 at 4:35 pm

@Kirstin: Kirstin…thanks for the great comments. Good luck with your marrige and move. Please keep me updated! I would love to hear how it goes for you. I am always looking for others opinions to share with all of my readers about their experiences in Norway. So it would be great to hear more from you. Sorry my contact form is not working…I know I need to get that fixed!

I too am from California and now living in northern Italy. I was excited when we got a little snow…little for us, but elsewhere not too far, meters upon meters to trap in enough country folk for the day. I think you would have loved it. Chances are, you will have more than your fair share this winter.

wow great pictures. i’m a studen who’s probably going to norway for an exchange program, and i was just surfing and ended up at your website. have to say i love the pictures. a side question – how do you rate the cost of living? because everyone seems to be railing about how high it is and expensive the place is!

  • 15 Sharon // Dec 6, 2008 at 2:52 am

I’m really excited about the snow too! We are hoping to move to Norway this summer.

The pictures look amazing! I love the snow :D

  • 17 Shannon // Dec 9, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Wow Kirstin… looks like we have something in common. I also spent the summer in Norway and I also got engaged while there to a Norwegian. He and I plan to marry in 2009 as well. I plan on getting married there as well as moving to norway. Let me tell you getting married to someone from another country is a crazy mess but I think we have finally figured it out. Anyone have any great ideas or know any good companies for shipping your belongings there that don’t cost a fortune? I’m not shipping a ton of things but somethings I just can’t do without like my art stuff.
Congrats to you as well and best wishes!

Hi, it’s nice to read about your blog. My father is an expat too and he is working in Doha, Qatar at the moment. Keep up your blog. Love the photos.

    That is absolutely beautiful!
The first year I lived in this Colorado ski town I was looking forward to the snow and it did not come until the end of Nov. The ski hill ended up opening 10 days late it was so bad. But when it starts it really gets going.

    Hey,

Kinda off-topic here. I wanted to send you an e-mail through the ‘Contact Me’ form, and I couldn’t type anything into it in either IE or Firefox.

Of course this might be a problem on my end, but I just thought I’d let you know.

    Keep on writing! :)

70 degrees! Hard to believe, but true.

I’ve wanted to visit Norway for the longest time, and those pictures are gorgeous. I like the second and third ones the best; they are beautifully captured; completely worthy of being published in a calendar or advertisement, I think. :)

  • 25 Kristie // Jan 4, 2009 at 10:20 pm

    @Anna: Thanks :)

  • 26 Kristie // Jan 4, 2009 at 10:25 pm

@Vibeke: Sorry… I know its been broken for a while, I have to fix that!

  • 27 Kristie // Jan 4, 2009 at 10:29 pm

@Stephanie: It is…after you estimate your ‘cost of living’ according to what you think it will be here, then double it because its always more expensive than you expect.

Hi there:-) I found you by typing into google “my life in norway”. I was thinking about sharing my time here as well. Maybe you could contact me when you have a moment, (I assume that your contact does not work based on all the other comments:-) Life abroad changes us over the years. After 14 years in Tønsberg, I feel like I do not fit in here or in L.A. sometimes. I guess that is a good thing as well depending on how you look at it:-) My journey/story has been pretty strange but I have a happy familly and company, both filled with daily challenges that make life…living!

  • 29 KZBlog // Jan 17, 2009 at 6:45 am
