New To Oslo Group

August 6th, 2007 · No Comments

I found a wonderful and supportive group for newcomers in Oslo, Norway. But to really explain how I found them and my experience so far with them, I need to get a little more personal. So a little about me…

I have ADD/ADHD(and actually have another blog about it if you are interested, please visit it www.adhd.kristiejoy.net). I have been kindof freaking out while I am preparing for my relocation overseas. Because I have no idea how I will be able to get my medicine while in Norway.

The reasons I forsee this being a big obstacle are #1) Its hard enough to get it here in the states. #2) I recently read an article about how the doctors in Europe are not convinced that ADD/ADHD even really exist.

So, knowing I have a challenge ahead of me I sought out other expats in Oslo for help.

On my mission looking for sympathetic expats in Norway that would be willing to help me out, I found this blog  An Irish Nomad In Norway. I sent her an email and asked for any direction on my issue. She was so sweet to respond and what she said was that I should sign up for the Yahoo Group New To Oslo

Of course, very thankful, I signed up for the group immmediately. And as soon as I signed up, I posted my question (aka my plea for help).

I had hoped someone would have some advice or something to help me, but I never expected such quick and helpful responses from so many people. The next day I had three emails with advice . Then still, a few days later I am getting multiple emails a day with help and advice in response to my post.

The willingness to lend a had to a total stranger was so touching. This group I felt, really reached out to me in a way that was so kind.

I was most deeply touched by a member who has helped me beyond words. She has helped my by opening up to me and sharing her very personal experiences. Its very heart warming to have someone who doesnt even know me open up so much just to help me - a stranger who was just asking for some advice. She is doing her best to make it possible for me to bypass the obstacles she ran into so its easier for me. And I am so appreciative of this, there are no words to describe (because this is a stressful situation for me).

Whats even more, this same kind ’stranger’ has offered to help me with whatever I need during or after my move. I mean, who could ask for more support? This “New to Oslo” group in the ONE WEEK that I have been a member, have given me so much support in my preparation to move to Oslo. Its amazing

Its really touched me, as I’ve said before, how kind and ready to help everyone in this group is.  They have been overwhelmingly generous and so willing to reach out their hands to their fellow expats - or in my case - their soon to be fellow expat/ neighbor in Oslo. :)

I have to add, that  I have noticed this “New to Oslo” group covers every topic you could possibly imagine. From finding an apartment, to toddler play dates, to just finding someone to hang out with that is your same age.

I definatelly had to write my rave review  - “two thumbs up” for the New to Oslo Yahoo Group. I am impressed! And so glad to have found them.

I wanted to share this treasure with you in case you are planning to move to Oslo, or are already there and need help with anything. I’d suggest joining, they are incredibly helpful.  Plus … nothing beats the feeling of being supported in a new adventure like moving to another country. Knowing that that group of people are there to help, makes you feel like someone really has your back! :)

Thank you to the Yahoo Group New to Oslo!!!
