To ship in the mail, or to pack and take on the plane? This is my question!
Here’s my big dilemma. How do I move all of my belongings from here to there? I don’t have my own house or apartment, so I really didn’t think I had that much stuff to move. Plus over the past few years I have been trying to minimize the amount of ’stuff’ that I have.
I have been diligently going through my things and either thrown out, given it to good-will or sold at garage sales. And I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job at it. I thought I didn’t have that many things, or that much stuff left.
Well, now that I’m beginning to pack for my move, it seems that what I saw as being so little is really a whole lot of crap! When you start putting your clothes in a pile, and your shoes and start adding other things like your blowdryer and curling iron…wow. I never realized how much stuff my so called “necessities” actually added up to be! Its amazing.

So back to the question…mail or take on the plane?
The thing that worries me about sending my stuff in the mail is the horror stories that I have heard. How common it seems to be that people put their stuff in the mail - never to see their belongings again. That on top of the personal experience of packages at my work being commonly lost in the mail. Not so reassuring.
Or I have the option of taking it all with me. Just paying the extra fees for the overweight luggage and the extra fees for additional bags and taking it all on the plane. Now this is more comforting to me - but there are two problems I see here (besides the ridiculous amount of money it would take to make this happen). First - the airlines are not regarded very highly as far as loosing luggage goes. There is always that. And second, on top of all the extra charges I will have for just taking them with me on the plane, once I get to Oslo I will have to take a cab from the airport to my house - because I don’t know how I could (even with the help of another person) carry all those bags on the train and then the subway and then walk with them to our home. And a cab ride from the airport would be an unreasonable amount of money - for sure.
I had talked with my best friend who was a manager at a hotel by Disneyland for the past four years. Because she had told me about how it was common for families who were just on vacation to ship their luggage back home because it was cheaper and easier. And now that she is a flight attendant she still tells me that shipping the stuff is the way to go.
Its just that there is something about shipping my stuff in the mail that makes my stomach turn.
What to do? Hmmm….I will keep you updated as to what I decide. Then of course I will let you know how it all works out!
