More About Shopping In Norway

September 18th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I went grocery shopping today. And I know that I recently posted about how its so weird to me that you always have to pay extra for bags here…and its still weird. But I also realized, while trying to fit a weeks worth of food (for two people) into ONE plastic bag, that I don’t like bagging my own groceries either!

Because not only do you have to pay extra for a bag if you want one, you have to bag your own groceries too. I would think that at least for the additional cost that you are paying if you purchase a bag, you should get the service of someone putting your things in that bag, right? Not take your money and throw the bag at you and start ringing up the person in line behind you and tossing all of their groceries in the same big pile they threw yours in….as you can see, it is a little different here in Norway than it is in the states. It was a little annoying and stressful trying to fish out all of MY groceries from the big pile of stuff and cram it into my ONE bag.

Anyways, I managed. And realized that there was a silver lining to my grocery episode. That although they charge for bags, the bags are really freaking strong! You have no idea how much stuff I put into this plastic bag. I thought for sure that it was going to break by the time I walked out of the store. I had images of the bottom giving out and everything going in a million directions and rolling down the street…But the bag lasted the entire fifteen minute walk. I was shocked.  I do think there are permanent red marks in my fingers because it was so heavy the handles were cutting into my fingers, but it did not break!

So if your moving to Norway or visiting Norway and plan on grocery shopping, bring a big purse.

Word of advise, if you think you’ve got groceries for one bag, tell them no if they ask about a bag, pay, and then ask for a bag. You’ll get it, no sweat. Same goes for more bags, you ask for one bag when you need two, pay, and then get another bag for free, it’s not quite like Whole Foods:)
