Got Milk?

November 3rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

One thing that is taking getting some used to for me while living in Norway is having the dates written backwards (to me at least). I am used to the format of how dates are written. For example today is November 1, 2007. So I would write this as 11-1-07. But here they put the day first than the month so it is 1-11-07. Now this does not seem like a huge problem, but there is one time where it seems to constantly confuse me.

That is when I look in the refrigerator and look at the expiration date on the milk. Like this morning. I looked at the expiration date on the milk and it said 10-11-07. I thought “what!?” because I just bought the milk last night. But then I realized that it was okay because they write the dates backwards. Just a little confusion!

i found your blog while killing time googling apartments in oslo. i have since read the entire thing (med interesse!) and have been taken back to the musings and experiences and thoughts that I first encountered when I lived in Norway.
I had so many similar hardships when i first moved that I think it definitely is culturally related (even the dishwasher stuff..)
well, i was just thinking that maybe you could post some helpful things on the elaborate process of moving to norway, ex. with residence permits, going to the police station (what a nightmare), opening a bank account, etc.etc.
These were all things I wish I known quite a deal more about before moving to Norway.

I am also curious as to why you are living in Norway. I know how easy it is to fall in love with it, but what made you move there without a job? In fact, HOW did you move there without a job?

I look forward to reading your blog more, especially when you start to learn norwegian. Lykke til.

I think the thing that freaked me out the most about the milk (in Germany anyway) was that it wasn’t sold cold.

I’m still amazed that I buy cartons of milk off a shelf with expiration dates three months out. Who knew…
