Getting Around In Oslo

September 18th, 2007 · 1 Comment

As an American that moved to Oslo, Norway….the costs of things here is painful. Everything is very expensive, its true. But there is one thing that I’ve found that although its expensive, it is actually very useful.

Its the monthly metro pass. Now, please forgive me if certain details of this are not perfect, but I will explain it to you the best I can.

The monthly metro pass cost 750kr- which at the moment is equal to $133.00. Yes, that is alot of money, BUT there is a plus side to it.

With the monthly metro pass, you can take the underground/metro train, the city busses, the tram AND the cool part is you can ride the boat that takes people to the different islands around Oslo.

And for example, on Sunday (when the whole city basically shuts down), for something fun to do, I was able to ride the boat around the harbor for “free”.

There are two reasons I wanted to share this with you. First is because if you are anĀ  American moving to Norway, like me, you probably wont have a car (like me). And believe me, it gets expensive REALLY quick getting around Oslo when you are paying for every trip. So the monthly pass is expensive but in my opinion worth it.

The second reason is because for anyone traveling to Oslo, Norway for vacation - they also have weekly passes. I am not sure how much the weekly passes cost, but with the metro pass you can get to all the places you would want to visit as a tourist here. Plus like I said, as an added bonus (at least to me) you can take the boats to the islands or just enjoy a trip around Oslo harbor and not have to pay anything extra.

Anyways, I just wanted to share my little discovery with everyone out there (especially anyone who lives in Oslo or is moving to Norway). Hopefully you will find it useful too!
