Getting A Visa To Norway

July 15th, 2008 · 12 Comments

This entry is part 4 of 10 in the series The Expatriates Guide To Living And Working In Norway

Do I need a visa to enter into Norway?

Norway has signed something called a “visa waiver agreement” with many other countries. What this does is allow nationals of any of these countries to enter into Norway without a visa for up to three months.  So, nationals of the following countries are not required to hold a visa to enter Norway for up to a three months period of time:

Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda (BDTC passport), Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong (SAR passport), Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korean Republic, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau (SAR passport), Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Uruguay, USA , Vatican State, Venezuela

IMPORTANT: For anyone from one of the countries listed above, you must remember that your stay of 90 days is not just within Norway, but you may only stay a total of 90 days within the entire Schengen area (over the past 180 days). Just to clarify what that means, is that if you have spent 90 days in any one or combination of the Schengen countries, you must leave the Schengen area for 90 more days before reentry. This is a super important point to remember and is only YOUR responsibility to make sure that this happens.

For citizens of all other countries, please find more information about visa requirements to enter into Norway at the Norwegian Embassy in your country (see the list below for your nearest Norwegian Embassy). They can tell you if you need a visa to enter into Norway.

For nationals from countries within the Schengen agreement (or anyone with a residence permit of a country that is a part of the Schengen area), you may enter Norway without any visa at all.  These countries include:

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden

Other people who might not need a visa to enter Norway include:

Anyone with a Norwegian residence, settlement or work permit. Certain diplomatic officials and a few other exceptions I have not listed here.

What do I need to apply for a visa to Norway?

  • A passport that is valid for 90 days beyond the time period which you are requesting a visa for.
  • Enough money for your travel to Norway and for your entire stay in Norway.

Where can I apply for a visa to Norway?

  • To your nearest Norwegian foreign service mission (see the list below).

Here is a list of Norwegian Embassies around the world. This is not a complete list, but hopefully a helpful starting point. Contact the Norwegian Embassy in your country for services regarding your move to Norway, getting visas to Norway and other consular services.

A really good and informative post - you really are an expert in this. Did you mention that within the Schengen aria, you don’t even need a passport if you are a citizen from one of their country?

Btw: I’m glad this visa regime includes US as that’s how my wife came over and become my wife ;-)

Thanks for all the info Kristie! So exciting. I got my acceptance letter for my Work Permit for Norway the other day, so I’m really excited. I think the process took a total of a 8 weeks. It was a very fast and easy process.

@swapnil walter rodrigues: I would suggest going to the closest Norwegian Foreign Mission office to find out what is possible and best for you to do. But best of luck! Let me know how it goes and if you need any other help.
