Cruising Up Norway’s Coast

July 25th, 2009 · 8 Comments

cruise up norways coastWhen living in Norway, you become very aware of the changes in season, or more accurately, the lack there-of. Winter is long, dark, cold and wet. It can really make you dream of where you want to run for some sun and warmth.

For me one of the things that I have loved to do in the past is take a cruise. I have not been on one in a long time, but I think it would be so much fun to take another cruise soon. During the winter in Oslo I know my husband and I would have loved to have hopped on a plane and take a beautiful Caribbean cruise. But since I am not in bikini body shape, I think I will take a ‘rain check’ for that vacation. There is another kind of cruise I really would love to take.

I think that my ideal cruise vacation would actually be one that goes during the summer and goes up along the coast of Norway. I know you probably all think that I am crazy and wondering why I would want to do that since I live in Oslo already. The reason is that I really want to see the west coast of Norway and the nature farther north. Since I have moved to Oslo I really have not gotten to see much of Norway other than Oslo. I would really love to see the rest of the country that is famous for its beautiful nature.

Plus if you get food and drinks on the cruise boats, there is no better way to see Norway since it is such an expensive country. I know a cruise up the coast of Norway would not be cheapcruise to norway but I do think that it would be my ideal cruise vacation.

Have you ever been on a cruise and loved it? Tell us about it in a comment below!

I’ve never been on a cruise, but I’d love too! That Norway one sounds good to me. :)

I’ve never been on one, but Hurtiruta along the Northern Norway would be on my top 3 list - to explore the Land of the Midnight Sun.

I love taking cruises. I find that Princess and Norwegian are the best cruise lines. I don’t like Carnival and Royal Caribbean is just mediocre.

I took a Greek Isle cruise, an Alaska cruise, a Caribbean Cruise, and a few Mexico cruises.

I just stumbled over your blog when I was looking for info on Lithuanian food.. Funny - You’re an american who moved to Norway - I’m a norwegian who moved to USA ;-) Anyway, I just wanted to comment on this. I’ve lived in Norway for 26 years - 21 on the west coast (Stavanger), and 5 in Oslo. Still, there is so much beautiful nature I’ve never seen. Especially Geirangerfjorden. I’ve never been on a cruise, but you inspired me! Now I want to take a cruise too, with Hurtigruten!

We did a cruise up the Norwegian coast last summer, and while we admittedly enjoy cruising in general, it was one of the most beautiful we’ve done. Of course all of our Norwegian colleagues raised an eyebrow that we would choose such a mainstream, package-tour kind of way to see their beautiful scenery. But after explaining the trip a dozen times and sharing our photos, I think most of them were convinced, and a few even started asking for information on cruiselines.

I envy you. :( I never been on a cruise my whole life. I’ll do anything to be in one. Just once will be enough. A cruise that will take me around the world will be great. If there is such as that kind of cruise. :D great article.

    Hey!

I come from a small island on the west coast, and those cruise ships you speak of have been one of my methods of transportation to Bergen and back since I was a child.

The coast is great, the food is good, the beds a comfortable enough, but it’s not really that “cool” if that’s what you’re looking for. Off season the boat is full of retired people, and during the summer a lot of tourists (which isn’t so bad).

If you want to see Norway quickly, I’d recommend you to e.g.
Take the train from Oslo to Bergen. Stay in Bergen for a few days, and have excursions to Preikestolen, take the FlÄmbanen, and maybe just enjoy the wetness of it all for a while ;)

After that, take the Hurtigruten further north, but make sure you get off for a trip to Briksdalsbreen.

I have to admit that I have never been further north than Trondheim, though. I think when you come up north where the pointy mountains are, and the real 24 hour sunlight, it’ll be an amazing experience.

And you know, Hurtigruten takes you all the way up there :)
