Today I was soooooooo excited because I got two (count-em two) packages from home (thanks mom & dad!!!!!!) all the way from LA to Oslo, Norway. Even though I had to lug the one big and one heavy package on the bus and then up and down the streets to get home, I didn’t care because it is so fun to get a package let alone two!
Anyways, I was super excited about seeing what was inside when I finally got them up the three flights of stairs and managed to open the door to the apartment and then set the packages down on the couch. I was like a little kid at Christmas ready to tear them open when I heard this loud noise over in the kitchen.
Just as I looked to see what it was, I saw a beautiful (but fairly large) bird squeezing its way into the small crack in the open window in the kitchen. Now I’m not joking when I say small. Maybe about four or five inches of space.
But the thing is, is how the windows in this apartment open its not what I would consider ‘normal’. It opens from the bottom and just leaves a very small opening at the bottom of the window (sorry it is hard to explain). But basically, the point is, its super small. Plus how the window is made the only way anything could get in it would be it would have to go under the glass and up and over the window-seal, its like an obstacle course for anything that would want to get through.
So my new unexpected friend went under and over and around the window to get inside, it was a struggle, especially since he had to squeeze through (like the kind of struggle you have when you put on a pair of jeans that are way to tight…thats what it sounded like).
So then finally the bird is in the house and I am like OMG…there is a bird in the house. What the heck am I supposed to do?? (and my second thought was - great, now there’s going to be a bunch of bird crap to clean up!).
So the bird and I sat there and stared at each other, I think we were both afraid to move because we were both afraid of what the other was going to do. Then he started to fly out the window, but not the same way he came in. He kept trying to fly straight through the glass a bunch of times, and when I think he practically knocked himself unconscious he stopped and just sat there.
So I realized he obvieousally knew it was not so bright so sqeeze his way through the window to get stuck inside, and wanted to go so I devised my master plan to set him free ;)
I closed all of the curtains so that he wouldn’t see outside from any of the windows (I felt so bad after he kept running into the window, he had to have hurt something he hit it so hard!) and I opened the door to the balcony which was the only place he could see outside.
He was very hesitant for a few minutes then finally flew out. I think we both were very relieved.
So I am so excited, no bird crap to clean up, no extra friends from nature in my apartment and its just me and my packages. I start to open the first one, and again, the same weird noise.
I look over to the kitchen….I was thinking “there is no way”…but yes, it was the same freaking bird squeezing his big bird butt through my tiny crack in the kitchen window!
I could not believe what was happening. But this time instead of panicking a little and having flashbacks of the movie “The Birds” I already knew what to do.
The second time it was easier, just closed the curtains and opened the door. He took a few minutes to leave (maybe he just wanted to hang out or something) but he finally left….and I shut the kitchen window!
So I was finally left alone by my unexpected friend to enjoy my packages in peace. :)
