Moving overseas and becoming an expat is no joke. But many people take up the challenge every year. Some are happy with their choice to live abroad, but some become disappointed when the see that the grass is not always greener on the other side.
Of course the decision to move to a new country and live as an expat is not one to be taken lightly. There are countless things to consider before making such a huge move. But if you are convinced that living in a foreign country is something that you really want to try, make sure you start thinking about the reality of what this move might be and not just the fantasy.
So here are 5 things to think about before becoming an expat!
1. Finances ~ How much it will cost to move and then live in your country of choice. For example, I moved to Norway where everything costs about three times more than it does in the US. Anyone contemplating an international move needs to know the cost of living in your dream country. Sometimes it is shocking how expensive life as an expat can be with so many unplanned costs. I am sure there is the flip side where sometimes (depending where you move) it can be cheaper too. Just never underestimate the costs of moving to and living in a new country!
2. Your Stuff ~ I can personally tell you how difficult and expensive it is to move overseas. The more stuff you have the harder (and more expensive) it is to go. Figure out what you will do with all of your stuff. Especially the things you can not take with you like your house and car.
3. The Rules ~ What are the rules and laws regarding expats in your new country. It is always good to know what the law says long before you go abroad. You never want to end up in a sticky situation with the law in an foreign place! Prepare documents and anything you need well in advance before you make your move. Nothing can stress out the new expat more than being unprepared for the legal part of moving to a new country.
4. Do you really want to do it? ~ Make sure this is the right choice for you. Never make a decision to do something as permanent as moving overseas unless it is truly what you want. Although nothing is truly permanent, undoing an international move is quite a big job!
5. Your health matters ~ Nothing in life is for sure, and health is one of those things. No matter how healthy you are right now you never know what could happen to you (especially in a new land). Be clear about what kind of healthcare is available and what the quality of that care is. This is a must for anyone wanting to live as an expat.
Well, these are just five quick things to start thinking about before you make your move. But don’t forget that there are many more things to consider. Always do your research and the internet is your friend when it comes to planning your life as an expat! Good luck!
